Natural Products & Biotechnology - Staff

Research & Studies Coordinator

Dr. Antonios Makris   Makris Antonios

Born in 1963 in Thessaloniki, he studied Biology in St. Cloud State University in Minessota and did an M.Sc. in General and Medical Microbiology in University College London. Returned to Greece to do his Ph.D. in the University of Athens Medical School where he worked on the characterisation of factors involved in liver specific autoimmune disease.

He then moved to Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia to work with P. Tsichlis on the mechanisms of signal transduction during cell activation.

In 1995 joined MAICh as the Head of the Department of Natural Products and Biotechnology.

Assosiate Senior Scientists

Dr. Christopher B. Johnson   Johnson Christopher B.

Born in 1945, he studied Botany at the University of Manchester and his PhD work was carried out at the University of Nottingham, in the School of Agriculture at Sutton Bonington, where he worked on the photocontrol of gene expression in higher plants, as well as carrying out early experiments on the uptake and expression of foreign DNA in plants.

He has since specialised extensively in the environmental and nutritional control of plant development, especially developmental effects of light. He has been a Visiting Professor at the University of Kobe, Japan.

Most recently he has concentrated on environmental and nutritional factors affecting secondary product formation, particularly essential oils, in aromatic plants. He is a consultant on the MEDUSA database.

Dr. Sotirios Kampranis   Kampranis Sotirios

Born in 1970, he studied chemistry at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and then for an M. Sc. in Biochemistry at Sussex University, UK. He then moved to Leicester University to work on DNA topoisomerases. There he studied the mechanism of superoiling by DNA gyrase and the molecular aspects of the inhibition of gyrase by quinolone antibacterials, coumarin antibiotics and the CcdB bacterial toxin.

He is a Senior Research Associate at the Department of Natural Products and Biotechnology in MAICh since September 1998. His work in MAICh so far focused on the biochemistry of proteins involved in oxidative stress resistance and apoptosis, and on the mechanism of biosynthesis of plant secondary metabolites by terpene synthases.
