Food Quality and Chemistry of Natural Products

MAICh

The laboratory of Chemistry of Natural Products & Analytical Chemistry serves a dual role:

  • Hosts the Research Personnel of the Department of Food Quality & Chemistry of Natural Products which focus on the research topics shown below.
  • Provides laboratory services for quality analyses (ISO 17025) in food featuring antibiotics in honey and volatile toxicants in water.

The main activities of the department involve research

  • on antioxidants and methods for their evaluation; chemiluminescence in-house techniques
  • on natural product isolation and structural identification
  • on chemical fingerprinting as a tool for authentication
  • toxicant residue detection and quantitation
  • on quality analyses of food products
  • on synthesis of natural products
  • on the exploitation of inexpensive renewable sources and agro industrial waste in view of obtaining added value products

The premises are equipped with GC-MS, LC-DAD-MS and LC-MS/MS facilities. GC units with specific detectors are in use (NPD, FPD, ECD, FID). Also, DAD, Refractive Index and Fluorescence detection is available for High Performance Liquid Chromatography including semi-preparative applications (HPLC 4 units).

The department as well, maintains and manages a part of the botanical gardens of the institute, which is dedicated to "Medicinal and Aromatic Plants". Plants from this garden sustainably feed a number of research projects (including MSc topics) the department is engaged with.
